2012-2013 Activities

In the year 2012, the Scientific Board wants to celebrate the VIII EMRSS Program by inserting it into the 9th Mediterranean Congress of PRM, which will take place in Sorrento (Naples) from October 21st to October 25th, at the same time as the SIMFER (Italian Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) 40th National Congress. During the event above, a whole day will be dedicated to the EMRSS, as a parallel session, during which two highly important topics for the young trainees. The program agenda is in progress because it has to be developed according to the needs of the international and national Congresses. Anyway, the likely idea is to focus on topics like Gait Analysis and ICF. The courses, as usual, will be thought by the best international professors in the field. Being that the EMRSS Program is happening to be at the same time as the European Congress, the 300 trainees who took part to its various editions have been invited (from 2005 to 2011). Moreover, in 2012 (from May 24st to May 26rd) Siracusa will host the 3rd edition of the Course of Management in Rehabilitation, organized by the EMRSS (www.prmschool.com) in partnership with CEFPAS (www.cefpas.it) and Fondazione Sant’Angela Merici (www.santangelamerici.it). The Course (very successful in the first 2 editions) is open to PMR Doctors, Rehab operators (Public and private Healtlh dept Managers, technicians etc.) and, reduced in number compared to traditional courses, young trainees indicated by Italian and foreign Universities. It will be in Italian language, therefore the Foreign Universities are to take care about indicating trainees who can understand it. The Program is attached to this note. In 2013, we are projecting the EMRSS IX Program, to be held in Siracusa from the 21st to the 25th of October. The topic is Rehabilitation in Mielolesions and it will have either theoretical classes at the Fondazione Sant’Angela Merici in Siracusa, or practical experiences at the Unipolar Spinal Unit, Cannizzaro Hospital in Catania.

7th Course report

The 7th EMRSS course was held in Syracuse from 24 to 28 October 2011. It was appreciated the note sent by the Director of the Institute of Health, the Telethon Chairman and Director of the W.H.O.
Prof. Alexander Giustini, President of the European Society of Doctors Physiatrists, together with the President of the Mediterranean Forum Lains Jorge stated that the topic was of great interest because it has allowed to know what are the novelties brought by the scientific research carried out by Institute of Health and Telethon and all Italian and foreign Universities operating in the field of rare genetic diseases. It was also presented the "first world report on disability" recently published by W.H.O. and covering 190 million people worldwide with disabilities.
In the field of rare genetic diseases and illnesses, scientific research has made great strides but the rehabilitation has developed increasingly sophisticated means of rehabilitation strategies.
The President Dr. Franco Cirillo points out that with the seventh edition of the course are now some 300 young doctors who have participated over the years the courses of EMRSS. The Young Doctors have come from about 20 countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan,
Israel, Tunisia).
Going beyond the scientific perspective, at the highest level, one of the most interesting aspects of this event was to bring out a spirit of solidarity and friendship between young people from different backgrounds and culture. Today more than 300 participants of previous editions continue to feel, to write, to meet and grow together not only as specialists in the field, but above all as "friends".
